Acupuncture for Sciatica: Relief from Nerve Pain
7 min read

Chronic pain affects millions of Americans and often leads to dependency on pain medications. Acupuncture offers a natural, effective alternative for long-term pain management. Unlike pain medications that mask symptoms, acupuncture addresses root causes and promotes lasting healing.
Unlike pain medications that mask symptoms, acupuncture:
Musculo-skeletal disorders include conditions affecting the joints and soft tissues of the body. Pain relief for these conditions usually occurs quickly; however, the overall prognosis depends on each patient and severity of disease.
Low back pain and sciatica are the most common health issues we treat. We have effectively treated hundreds of patients with sciatica, degenerative disc disease, herniated discs, and stenosis.
Low back pain and sciatica are among the most debilitating conditions we encounter. The sharp, shooting pain can severely impact daily activities, work, and quality of life. Acupuncture offers rapid, drug-free relief.
An out-of-alignment hip or a hip that feels out of place can cause low back or hip pain. But how does acupuncture help with hip misalignment?
The hips are not out of alignment for no reason. If the muscles in the low back, buttocks, hamstrings, hip flexors, and quadriceps are tight or spasmed, this will pull the spine out of alignment and can cause the hips to become misaligned.
However, fixing hips that are out of place or unequal leg lengths doesn't always resolve the pain. That's because there can be inflammation in the sacroiliac joint or the muscles around the hips. This is where acupuncture really shines. Acupuncture is very effective in regulating inflammation, especially in the muscles, fascia, ligaments, and tendons.
The immune system regulates a large part of inflammation in the human body, and acupuncture has been shown to have numerous effects on the immune system and therefore the inflammatory process. Acupuncture or dry needling can help release tight muscles, reduce inflammation, and help realign the hips.
Piriformis syndrome is one of the most under-diagnosed pain issues in clinical practice. Many patients with piriformis syndrome are misdiagnosed with sciatica.
Piriformis syndrome involves a deep gluteal (buttock) muscle called the piriformis. This muscle can tighten or spasm and pinch the sciatic nerve. Patients typically complain of pain deep in their buttocks and often state "it feels like the pain starts close to the bone." This is a muscle injury that can affect the nerve.
Typical acupuncture treatments for piriformis syndrome target the buttocks, low back, hip flexors, hamstrings, and calves. Treatment is similar to low back treatment but can have subtle differences depending on the patient. The most important goal is to get the buttock or deep gluteal muscles to release and relax.
Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common ailments affecting the feet and can be painful and debilitating. Acupuncture treatment for plantar fasciitis typically targets the low back, hamstrings, quadriceps, calves, Achilles tendon, and of course the feet.
The upstream areas from the feet are vital to treat. It's extremely rare for a patient with plantar fasciitis to not have pain or tightness in other areas of the lower body. Treating only the feet without addressing these upstream areas will result in incomplete healing.
Morton's neuroma is one of the trickier conditions to treat with acupuncture. Morton's neuroma is described as a thickening of tissue around the nerves in the foot. Most patients feel like there's a sharp rock or piece of glass in their foot, worse with activity and standing. Practitioners can often palpate a piece of tissue in the balls of the feet.
Acupuncture treatment for Morton's neuroma is more varied than for other pain conditions. Sometimes it's best to treat Morton's like a typical nerve or muscle injury. Often times, it becomes an internal medical diagnosis from a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective. In TCM, Morton's neuroma is typically a blood stasis disorder or a phlegm/damp pathogen.
We recommend a minimum of six visits for Morton's neuroma treatment, and many patients benefit from ongoing care.
Neck pain is extremely common and can result from poor posture, muscle tension, whiplash, or degenerative disc disease. We regularly treat neck pain and most people experience rapid relief from their symptoms. Even if you've had spinal fusions or stenosis, acupuncture is a fast and effective way to treat your pain.
Peripheral neuropathy is characterized by numbness, tingling, and pain in the hands and feet. It is peripheral to the central nervous system of the brain and spine. It usually responds very well to acupuncture. We've found that acupuncture is an effective way to treat neuropathy and most people improve within 4 visits.
Fibromyalgia is a disease of unknown origin with an autoimmune component. It is commonly found in conjunction with Chronic Fatigue Immune Deficiency Syndrome (CFIDS). Approximately 75% of fibromyalgia sufferers also have sleep disturbance.
In our experience, regulating sleep is an essential component of treating fibromyalgia. Sleep is when our body undergoes its most profound healing. When sleep is disturbed, the healing process is stymied and recovery from pain and fatigue is difficult. Acupuncture can help with both pain management and sleep regulation, addressing the root cause of fibromyalgia symptoms.
Most patients with chronic pain experience significant improvement within 6-12 weeks of consistent treatment. Many achieve lasting relief and reduced pain medication use.
Pain relief for musculo-skeletal conditions usually occurs quickly; however, the overall prognosis depends on each patient and severity of disease.
