Susan Ko became California state board licensed as an acupuncturist in 2006 and nationally certified by the National Certification Commission in Acupuncture in 2005. She obtained her Master of Science in Traditional Chinese Medicine in 2006 from the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in San Francisco, California. With her interest in women’s and community health, she has worked in a number of public and private settings such as a medical outreach project in Paraguay for Amigos de las Americas, Women’s Community Clinic in SF, and as a full time staff under Dr. Lifang Liang, renowned specialist in infertility and gynecology.
Susan’s interest in holistic medicine began from personal experience after becoming sick during a rural medical outreach program in South America. She was left in a weakened state and could find little in western medicine that could help; a friend suggested seeing her homeopath and out of desperation, she sought her help. Through the homeopath’s care she had a profound recovery, and this remarkable healing experience led her to explore holistic medicines, impressing on her the importance of addressing the whole person (mind, body, spirit). Her studies have included homeopathy, naturopathy, nutrition, human energy systems, and Chinese Medicine.
She became especially passionate about Chinese Medicine after returning from a trip to China and Tibet where she learned qigong, was introduced to the historical and cultural roots of the medicine, and witnessed the medicine’s widespread and effective use in treating a vast array of disease in those countries.
In her practice, Susan enjoys bringing together the knowledge and insights gained from her experiences with various holistic medicine disciplines. She treats a wide variety of conditions chronic and acute through her use of Chinese herbs, acupuncture, food and nutrition guidance, lifestyle counseling, and other therapies as deemed appropriate. She has a particular passion in treating women’s health concerns especially infertility (both men and women), couples going through IUI and IVF, menstrual and menopausal imbalances, associated emotional swings and chronic migraines.
In her post-graduate studies, Susan Ko completed the Diplomate in Canonical Chinese Medicine in 2012, a specialty post-graduate herbal medicine program that is taught by Arnaud Versluy, PhD, LAc, MD (China). She is also a follower of Kiiko Matsumoto style acupuncture. This method of palpation based acupuncture is currently the favored acupuncture style taught at Harvard Medical School. She learned the system through teachings of Kiiko Matsumoto, David Euler, Holly Guzman and Avi Magidoff.
She received her ACN (Applied Clinical Nutritionist) from Life West Chiropractic College in 2017. The ACN is a whole food based, functional nutrition approach to treating root cause of disease. This approach is usually not as heavily lab based as traditional functional medicine approaches.
