Acupuncture to Regulate Periods or Menstrual Cycles
Can acupuncture help regulate periods or menstrual cycles? Yes, acupuncture can help regulate periods. We want the menstrual cycle to be approximately 28 days from the first day of your cycle to the first day of your next cycle. There are multiple types of dysregulated periods and it deserves its own separate page.
You may have amenorrhea (lack of period), dysmenorrhea (painful periods), irregular cycles in which you miss periods, or irregular cycles in which the interval is too short (less than 25 days) or too long (beyond 31 days), or prolonged bleeding and spotting. Acupuncture can help to regulate these periods.
Typical acupuncture treatment would be once per week for the first 4 weeks; if there is significant progress, then we would space out the treatments to 1 treatment every 2 weeks. Please allow at least 3 cycles to determine progress.
Acupuncture for PMS or Premenstrual Syndrome is a common procedure in our clinic. PMS affects approximately 1/3 of premenopausal women. Common symptoms include pain, breast tenderness, bloating, weight gain, diarrhea, skin outbreaks, mood swings, low energy and food cravings. Many PMS patients deal with their pain through over-the-counter or prescription pain medications. Acupuncture for cramps is very safe and effective.
Acupuncture and herbs are very effective in treating PMS. Regulating emotions and relieving pain are usually the first steps taken in treating PMS. Most patients experience improvement in their symptoms by their first or second cycle.
Acupuncture for Menopause: Menopause is part of the natural menstrual cycle of a woman and signals the end of menstruation. In this regard, menopause is not a disease but part of the expected change that women experience. Menopause can be premature due to ovarian failure or surgical removal of the ovaries. Acupuncture treatment can help menopause and symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, depression and mood swings, and drying and thinning of mucous membranes.
Acupuncture for Perimenopause: Perimenopause is the transitional time in a woman's life before menopause. However, women should not experience menopausal symptoms during their late 30s or 40s. If a patient has hot flashes, night sweats, anxiety or other symptoms, it is a sign that the body is severely imbalanced. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the common cause of perimenopause is a deficiency in the bodily fluids of either liver blood or kidney yin.
Blood deficiency perimenopausal patients tend to have cold hands and feet or a narrow temperature band in which they are comfortable, anxiety, light sleep, pale tongue and a thready pulse. Kidney yin type perimenopausal patients tend to have the more classic symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats and irritability; common findings include a wiry pulse and red tongue body.
Acupuncture for PCOS: polycystic ovarian syndrome affects 90% of women with irregular periods and 10% of all women that in their reproductive years. The common symptoms are irregular periods, no period (amenorrhea), obesity, excess facial and body hair, balding and acne. PCOS can also dramatically decrease fertility. So how does acupuncture help treat PCOS?
Acupuncture helps to normalize the entire autonomic nervous system. This autonomic nervous system is composed of the parasympathetic system, also known as the "feed and breed" or "rest and digest" part of our body. Acupuncture also helps to regulate the sympathetic nervous system, known as the "fight or flight" response. We need both systems to work in coordination with each other.
When acupuncture coordinates the two systems, the hormonal system is normalized and the neuroendocrine system is relaxed. This can also have beneficial affects on the reproductive system and improve periods and fertility outcomes.
Acupuncture is a wonderful way of treating gynecological issues. If you would like help, please make an appointment or inquire for more information.
