Can I Do Acupuncture During Pregnancy? And Is Acupuncture Safe During Pregnancy?
Congratulations on being pregnant! Now let's ensure that you have a healthy pregnancy and smooth birth delivery.
Yes! You can do acupuncture during pregnancy and it is safe. Here are some of the common benefits of acupuncture during pregnancy:
1. Improve fertility outcomes and hold for full term
2. Reduce nausea and vomiting
3. Regulate high blood pressure (pre-eclampsia)
4. Reduce back and pelvic pain
4. Reduce stress and anxiety
Fertility is not simply conception but establishing a healthy pregnancy for a full 9 month term. Our goal is not simply a positive pregnancy test; instead, it is helping the mother have a healthy pregnancy and childbirth.
First Trimester Acupuncture (Weeks 1-12)
Unfortunately conception does not guarantee pregnancy and only 25%-50% of conceptions result in healthy pregnancy; implantation failure causes a 75% failure rate and this not considered miscarriage. Acupuncture can help encourage safe implantation and maintain pregnancy. Other common symptoms that we can help manage are fatigue, nausea, bloating, constipation, morning sickness and food and smell aversions.
During the first trimester, we recommend acupuncture on a weekly basis.
Second Trimester Acupuncture (Weeks 13-27)
Common problems encountered in the second trimester are swelling, acid reflux, gestational diabetes, low back pain, pelvic pain and pre-eclampsia (high blood pressure). If there is a history of miscarriage, we typically recommend second trimester acupuncture at every 1-2 weeks. If the mother is doing great and there are no problems, we recommend acupuncture every 4 weeks. Frequency of visits during the second trimester varies widely and depends on the mother's health.
Third Trimester Acupuncture (Weeks 28-36)
Physical discomfort typically becomes more pronounced during this time. It's common to hear from mothers that "they just want to get this done!" It's ok, we're here to help!
It's very common to have symptoms such as back pain, swelling, frequent urination and difficulty sleeping. More serious problems could be gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia and vaginal bleeding. We usually recommend acupuncture weekly if there are more serious health issues, every other week for discomfort issues and every four weeks if things are routine.
Birth Preparation (Weeks 37 - Successful Birth)
This is another pivotal time as a mother's body is preparing for labor. Acupuncture can help stimulate the release of oxytocin, which is a hormone that can stimulate uterine contractions. Stimulating labor induction is most helpful from week 38. We typically recommend weekly treatments during this time except for labor induction, which is on a case by case basis.
