Acupuncture and Pain Management
Musculo-Skeletal Disorders include conditions such as low back pain, sciatica, knee pain, shoulder pain, hip pain and any other condition affecting the joints and soft tissues of the body. Pain relief for these conditions usually occurs quickly; however, the overall prognosis depends on each patient and severity of disease.
Low Back Pain and Sciatica are the most common health issues that we treat. We have effectively treated hundreds of patients with sciatica, degenerative disc disease, herniated discs and stenosis.
Out of Alignment Hip or a Hip That Feels Out of Place can also be a cause of low back or hip pain. So how does acupuncture help misalignment in the hips? The hips are not out of alignment for no reason. If the muscles in the low back, buttocks, hamstrings, hip flexors and quadriceps are tight or spasmed, this will pull the spine out of alignment and can cause the hips to be misaligned.
However, fixing hips that are out of place or unequal leg lengths doesn't always resolve the pain. That's because there can be inflammation in the sacroiliac joint or the muscles around the hips. And that's where acupuncture really shines. Acupuncture can be very effective in regulating inflammation especially in the muscles, fascia, ligaments and tendons. The immune system regulates a large part of the inflammation in the human body and acupuncture has been shown to have numerous effects on the immune system and therefore the inflammatory process.
Acupuncture or dry needling can help release these tight muscles, reduce inflammation and help to realign the hips. There are significant differences between dry needling and acupuncture.
Piriformis Syndrome is one of the most under-diagnosed pain issues that I've seen in my career. Many patients with piriformis syndrome can be mis-diagnosed with sciatica. Piriformis syndrome involves a deep gluteal or butt muscle called the piriformis. This muscle can tighten or spasm and pinch on the sciatic nerve. Patients typically complain of pain deep in their buttocks, and will state "that it feels like the pain starts close to the bone". This is a muscle injury that can affect the nerve.
Typical acupuncture treatments for piriformis syndrome will target the buttocks, low back, hip flexors, hamstrings and calves. Acupuncture treatment for piriformis syndrome is similar to treatment for the low back but there can be subtle differences, depending on the patient. The most important thing is to get the buttock or deep gluteal muscles to release and relax.
Plantar Fasciitis is one of the most common ailments affecting the feet and can be painful and debilitating. Acupuncture treatment for plantar fasciitis typically target the areas of the low back, hamstrings, quadriceps, calves, Achilles tendon and of course the feet. I've found that the upstream areas from the feet are vital to treat; it's extremely rare for a patient with plantar fasciitis to not have pain or tightness in other areas of the lower body.
Morton's Neuroma is one of the trickier conditions to treat with acupuncture. Morton's Neuroma is described as a thickening of tissue around the nerves in the foot. Most patients feel like there's a sharp rock or piece of glass in their foot, worse with activity and standing. I can often palpate a piece of tissue in the balls of the feet.
Acupuncture treatment for Morton's Neuroma is more varied than for other pain conditions. Sometimes it's best to treat Morton's like a typical nerve or muscle injury. Often times, it becomes an internal medical diagnosis from a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective. In TCM, Morton's Neuroma is typically a blood stasis disorder or a phlegm/damp pathogen. I have worked with a number of Morton's Neuroma patients using acupuncture and I would recommend a minimum of six visits.
Neck Pain (cervicalgia) is also extremely common. We regularly treat neck pain and most people experience rapid relief from their symptoms. Even if you've had spinal fusions or stenosis, acupuncture is a fast and effective way to treat your pain.
Peripheral Neuropathy is characterized by numbness, tingling and pain in the hands and feet. It is peripheral to the central nervous system of the brain and spine. It usually responds very well to acupuncture. We've found that acupuncture is an effective way to treat neuropathy and most people improve within 4 visits.
Fibromyalgia is also a disease of unknown origin and has an autoimmune component. It is commonly found in conjunction with Chronic Fatigue Immune Deficiency Syndrome (CFIDS). Approximately 75% of fibromyalgia sufferers also have sleep disturbance. In our experience, regulating sleep is an essential component of treating Fibromyalgia. Sleep is when our body undergoes its most profound healing. When sleep is disturbed, the healing process is stymied and recovery from pain and fatigue is difficult. Acupuncture can help with pain management.
Acupuncture is a wonderful way of treating pain and inflammation. If you're suffering from intense pain or neuropathy, please make an appointment or inquire for more information.
